NIVA worked with Fagerborg skole, Oslo, Norway to developed a student led project for 9th graders as part of their elective module “Science in Practice”. The collaboration began with a full day (online) lesson with presentations, group activities and discussions on plastic pollution in the local area. Students mapped their research questions on marine plastic pollution and designed their own field studies on local beaches. Students chose to sample their local beach (Huk in Oslo), a park (Frognerparken, Oslo) and a lakeside (Songsvann, Oslo) using citizen science approaches for sampling (including their own “water sampler”), data analysis and scientific reporting. Students also had the chance to work with NIVAs NIR scanner to confirm the chemical identity of the plastics found. Activities happened during the spring/summer term in 2021.
